What is Alzheimer’s Disease? Alzheimer’s disease is defined as a serious loss of cognitive ability in a previously unimpaired person, beyond what might be expected from normal aging. Caring for someone with Alzheimer’s disease involves customized services and differs from other types of housing for seniors. Alzheimer’s Disease, also know as Dementia, affects over 26 million people in the world today and almost 5 million people just in the United States alone. Symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease are confusion, anger, mood swings, wandering, memory loss and loss of language.

Since Alzheimers care is a specialized need, it is important to ask a senior care provider if there is alzheimer’s care available for seniors suffering from dementia. Many Alzheimers care providers are housed in an Assisted Living or Nursing home facility where the residents; often live in private apartments; a trained staff will be on duty that specializes in Dementia Care.

There are different living options available for Alzheimer’s care residents. As mentioned, many patients live in assisted Living facilities or nursing homes where there are private apartments for dementia care patients. There are also stand-alone Alzheimer care providers called Memory Care communities or Alzheimer’s special care units that focus solely on the needs of dementia care patients.??

These stand-alone facilities provide an environment that is conducive to the psychology of alzheimer’s care patients. For example, the architectural layouts in the stand-alone units provide hallways that are circular in order to not simulate a dead-end in a hallway or in other sections. This is because a dead-end can act as a source of stress in some kinds of Alzheimer’s disease. In an Alzheimer’s care facility, environment is just as important as medication and behavior.

The right environment helps remove feelings of anxiety, stress, depression, social withdrawal, and hallucinations. In order to achieve an environment that is conducive to Alzheimer’s care, resident’s staff members do not wear uniforms; units include full bedrooms, living rooms, dining rooms, and full kitchens so that they present residents with a feeling of home.

Exit doors are placed off to the left or right of hallways so they are not perceived as destinations, which helps limit wandering, a usual symptom of Dementia. Most facilities have a beautiful, easy accessible garden, which makes residents feel less trapped, and more in tune with nature.

Below are the 10 most common Signs and Symptoms of Alzheimer’s Disease:
1. Being confused with time and places:

During the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease you may notice your parent or elderly loved one begin to lose track of important dates and times. An example would be birthday’s, their own or a relative’s, or even the current day of the week. Also many start to loss a sense of time, and when things are not happening immediately a sense of frustration may set in. This is because they forgot how much or how little time has actually gone by.

2. Short-term memory loss:

One of the most common signs of Dementia is short-term memory loss and forgetting recently learned information. Also its common to forget names and appointments but then remembering them later. Many who have Alzheimer’s disease will ask for the same information over and over and rely on visual aides like reminder notes to help jog their memory. Another common sign is forgetting where they currently are or how they got there.

3. Withdrawal from Social Activities:

?Dementia can make it difficult to keep up with a favorite sports team or even how to complete a favorite hobby. Also feeling weary around family and friends in a social setting is typical because of the events and experiences one tends to forget. This can make it uncomfortable for someone suffering with dementia to be around people they have essentially been around their entire life. Alzheimers care warning signs

4. Feeling of confusion and anxiety:??

Changes in mood and personality are common with Alzheimer’s patients and feelings confusion and anxiety may start setting in. This can make your elderly loved one act suspicious and even start feeling depressed. They will tend to carry these feelings into the work place and home making them feel very uncomfortable in their normal environment.

5. Misplacing Items:

Misplacing regularly used items like a pair of reading glasses or a wallet, or even favorite coffee mug are typical during early signs of Alzheimer’s disease. Usually they will place such items in an unusual place and then look for the item where they normally would place it, or if they realize that an item was place in an irregular place they will forget how to retrace their steps in order to find an item. As time goes on this sort of activity will to happen more often.

6. Difficulty solving problems or paying bills:

If your elderly loved one likes playing crossword puzzles or even board game they may start finding it difficult to engage in such activities due to a lack of focus. Others may have problems paying bills correctly or even balancing a checkbook. This is a bi-product of slowly losing the ability to concentrate.

7. Difficulty managing daily tasks:

It becomes difficult to manage using a microwave oven, brewing coffee in the morning, or even recording ones favorite TV programs may become difficult even though these tasks may be conducted on a daily basis. Other tasks like managing daily perceptions or driving to a familiar location also tend to happen during early signs of dementia.

8. Communicating and writing:

?Those with Alzheimer’s disease tend to have trouble engaging or following along during a conversation. Typically your elderly loved one may repeat themselves during a conversation or even stop in the middle of a conversation and forget what they were discussing. Forgetting words and struggling with vocabulary are also early signs of dementia. Many seniors will tend to call items by the wrong name.

9. Loss of good judgment:

A change in decision-making or poor judgment is common in people with Alzheimer’s. This can be one of the scariest effects of the Alzheimer disease because this can mean a poor judgment dealing with money and assets. There have been cases in giving large amounts of money to telemarketer or other solicitors. Other signs include touching a stove that is still hot or even drinking expired milk.

10. Difficulty understanding shapes and objects:

Some suffering with Alzheimer’s Disease start having issues with their cataracts which causes them to slowly lose their vision. This can make it difficult to read their favorite book or newspaper and to understand items like stop signs or traffic lights. Once their vision is affected judging the distance or contrast of an object become difficult because they start losing their depth perception.

Alzheimer’s or Alzheimer’s illness can be a debilitating problem which not simply affects the elderly individual but in addition his/her family members at the same time. Given that this illness involves mental problems and dementia, not many people, which includes family members, are capable to provide the most effective care for sufferers acquiring this disease. Alzheimer’s also worsens through time and so patients need to be taken cared of according to what they need to have at any provided time. For residents with the US northeast for example, there are different care facilities for Alzheimer’s patients. Within the state of Maine as an example, Maine Alzheimer’s care facilities could be found across the state. A lot of of these amenities supply the basic solutions expected of an Alzheimer’s care facility, but a lot of facilities also supply extra services and management care options for Alzheimer’s individuals.

And when talking about Maine Alzheimer’s care amenities, you will find in fact different alternatives dependant upon the preferences of family members. To begin picking in the very best of Maine Alzheimer’s care facilities, one could search at the area. A lot of members of the family would would like to have their mother and father and/or grandparents who’ve Alzheimer’s to become close by or no less than to be not too far away to go to. That is especially applicable to close-knit families and families which have get-together traditions on weekends and/or particular occasions. If a single family member who has Alzheimer’s is admitted to a facility at a very remote area, it might be tough for the patient and members of the family to cope with this main family members concern.

But you can find also individuals who favor remote locations and other amenities for their very own Alzheimer’s patients. One particular may possibly be a resident of Maine or New Jersey as an example, but he/she may opt to possess his/her grandparent admitted to a single of numerous Rhode Island Alzheimer’s care amenities. As using the amenities in Maine, Rhode Island Alzheimer’s care facilities may possibly also be capable of give the fundamental solutions need for individuals with Alzheimer’s. This holds correct for the other states that also have a variety of patient care amenities, including those that particularly take care of Alzheimer’s care.

But aside from place, members of the family also take into account the services offered by a specific Alzheimer’s care facility. Though Alzheimer’s individuals have related methods, management and care is created for each and every person and members of the family can select which facility and which service is greatest for their loved a single who has Alzheimer’s illness.

Members of the family might also try and verify out if a particular Alzheimer’s care facility involves a homey ambience or a lot more of a clinical or hospital setup. Many people choose amenities that supply residential care with parks close by. Other folks meanwhile, favor normal setups similar to hospitals as well as other healthcare amenities. Alzheimer’s care facilities might also offer you a number of recreational possibilities for admitted patients and they are also regarded by most members of the family when deciding which facility to decide on for their parent or grandparent who has this debilitating illness.

Total, members of the family usually decide on what they consider as the best care facility for their loved ones with Alzheimer’s. Be it in Maine, Rhode Island, or other states, probably the most crucial issue is that the best care is offered for loved ones.

By Jeffrey Gold

“My mother doesn’t remember to turn off the stove.” “My husband takes a walk and doesn’t always seem to know his way home.” “My wife sometimes stops in mid-sentence and can’t complete her thought.” “My father sometimes forgets who my kids are.”

These and many other concerns, indicate the possibility of dementia. Dementia is a slow or progressing decline in mental abilities, such as concentration, staying on task, and memory. Once someone has been diagnosed with dementia, it means that other medical possibilities which may account for the declining abilities have been examined and ruled out. The task is now to figure out how to make choices in dementia care that will provide safety and basic needs in the least restrictive manner, and the least costly way.

One method of caring for a person with dementia is at home. Many American spouses currently care for their husband or wife at home, which can be physically and mentally stressful for the caregiver spouse. Sometimes the adult children help their parents cope with the extra responsibilities. Most people don’t like to go out of their homes when they are experiencing some confusion or forgetfulness. They like the routine and familiarity with their home and will become angry and resistant of out-of-home care.

There are many cases in which additional help is brought in. For example, there are many home health and companion agencies which provide paid helpers to take care of the family member with dementia, and also of the spouse. Also, there are products which can be purchased to make the house a safer environment.

Other times, the aging parent or parents move in with their adult children. Relocating, however, can cause stress and irritability, and can even result in reduced mental or cognitive functioning, as the safety and familiarity of the home, and the sense of belonging and ownership is lost.

Adult day care centers are springing up around the nation as an alternative to home based care. These centers provide structured activity and supervision, along with socialization and stimulation, while the spouse and caretakers have relief or go to work. Many participants of such programs get used to the new routine and enjoy the socialization and stimulation, while at the same time continue to return home in the evening.

Assisted living facilities are also a fast growing industry, as nursing homes become cost prohibitive and focus on the most intensively medically needy members of the population. Many assisted living facilities offer quiet and modern appearances, private rooms, all or most meals, and security for dementia care.

As the residents of these facilities age, the assisted living facilities offer increased levels of care to provide an opportunity for “aging in place” and avoid the need to move to a nursing facility. Trips are often provided when a person is able to benefit from and safely attend a trip out of the facility. Group activities are often offered on site as well.

Nursing facilities, or nursing homes, are the most costly and most restrictive outside of hospitals. They provide more intensive medical care, and have historically provided choices in dementia care, including locked units and fenced in yards. Many facilities offered skilled care, and are called skilled nursing facilities or skilled nursing homes. The skilled level of care includes intensive nursing care, physical therapy and other therapies and rehabilitation. Medicare covers some of this care, which takes place after a brief hospitalization, with the hope of recovery and movement to a less restrictive environment.

Unskilled or custodial care in a nursing home is designed for those whose abilities to care for themselves or to receive care at home or in another setting is declining. Examples of these types of nursing home placements include choices in dementia care, long term care for hip fractures, heart failure and other medical conditions that have worsened over time. Medicare does not usually cover the long term placement.

The many choices in dementia care can be overwhelming. Talk to your doctor about where to start. Visit adult day care, assisted living facilities and nursing homes, and interview the social workers and admission professionals. Hospital discharge social workers are also a good source of help; their job is to find placements for hospital patients who are being discharged and they know many of the area resources.

In addition, most counties have an office dedicated to consulting for elderly issues, such as the county Area Agency for the Aging (AAA) or there are Geriatric Care Consultants, who you can find in your yellow pages, who will advise you about the choices in dementia care in your community.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions about the care and how to finance it; there are many government programs that may help pay the cost.

By David H. Urmann

Persons with dementia gradually lose their memory to the point of forgetting their family’s faces. Learn how to handle people with dementia.

Dementia is the diagnosis to people who find it extremely difficult to think and/or communicate. The usual symptom of dementia is the loss of memory. They forget simple tasks like putting on clothes or even their names. It is not a disease but a condition.

There are many underlying causes of dementia, such as: Alzheimer’s disease, head injury, tumor of the brain, and stroke. All these causes can affect brain cells that ultimately lead to dementia.

Brain functions include language, memory, perception and cognitive skills. To be diagnosed with dementia, two or more functions of these brain functions must be remarkably affected while the patient is still conscious.

There are some drug remedies for dementia. They cannot totally treat dementia but can delay the progression of the disease. Dementia slowly progress from mild, to moderate, then severe.

Mild Dementia

People with mild dementia can still go on with their daily activities like driving. They however experience difficulties in working and socializing already.

Moderate Dementia

Close attention and supervision is necessary. Living alone is dangerous for them. Driving is prohibited.

Severe Dementia

Round-the-clock supervision is required. People with severe dementia are unable to observe personal hygiene, can’t express themselves clearly and find it difficult to speak. People in this late stage are psychologically handicapped and may lose muscular functions.

Families with a member afflicted with dementia find it hard and difficult to deal with their sick loved ones. Communication is the number one challenge. It is frustrating not to be able to express feelings verbally.

Family members are usually expected to be the first ones to understand the condition of the demented. It is not good to argue with them because they cannot understand. They will just be agitated.

Be informed about this condition so as not to be disappointed when dealing with demented people.

A demented is agitated easily with abrupt changes in the environment. They are also agitated in challenging situations, like being unable to express what they want. Give them easy and simple tasks as much as possible.

People with dementia hallucinate in frightening situations. Keep a lively and joyful environment in their presence.

Demented people are prone to accidents because of their condition. Careful not to embarrass them to preserve their dignity. Be sensitive. They need all the love and understanding.

Accidents commonly happen in the bathroom. Be a step ahead in helping demented people use the toilet. Always have a commode and pads within reach in the bathroom.

Put fences in your yard to keep them from wandering too far. Place warning signs or stop signs to doors. It sometimes help to conceal doorknobs to prevent them from going out alone. Install an alarm system. A medical bracelet is useful to track them when they get lost. Set regular physical activities or exercises for them.

There are lists of diagnostic procedures for dementia. Doctors usually start with the patient’s history. Physical examination and neurological evaluations can help identify causes of dementia such as stroke. CT or Computed Tomographic scan, MRI, EEGs or electroencephalograms, functional MRI, SPECT, PET, MEG or magneto encephalography are some of the diagnostic tests. Laboratory tests such as CBC, urinalysis, alcohol test, test for blood glucose, and analysis of the cerebrospinal fluid are necessary in ruling out conditions producing the same symptoms.
